Last monolingual Chickasaw Speaker Passes Away

The Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma has announced the death of Emily Johnson Dickerson, 93, who spoke only Chickasaw her entire life. She passed away on December 30, 2013.

Dickerson was the last monolingual Chickasaw language speaker. There are an estimated 70 fluent Chickasaw language speakers left, according to Joshua Hinson, Director of the Chickasaw Nation Language Department.
